Simple Ways to Increase Productivity

Simple Ways to Increase Productivity

Sometimes there are things that need to get done, but we lack the motivation to begin the task. Over the years, I have found little tips and tricks to help me become more productive and stay ahead of deadlines.

  • Make a to-do list

I recommend making yours the night before. Whenever I try to make mine in the morning, I tend to forget something. I throw in some simple tasks as well, like making my bed or responding to an email. It helps to get the ball rolling if you can start checking things off your list immediately. You can also put a star next to your most important tasks so you know what needs to be prioritized. Most of the time it helps to do the difficult tasks early in the day.

  • Make a not-to-do list

Make a list of things you want to avoid doing. For me, TikTok is at the top of this list. I know that if I open that app I will be scrolling for an hour. Be honest about your distractions and put them down on paper.

  • Reward yourself

You do not want productivity to feel like a chore. Have a reward system so you can have more positivity in your day. This can be promising yourself a trip to the store after your list is completed, a bowl of ice cream waiting for you, or even a relaxing night in your pajamas with your favorite movie.

  • Set realistic goals

It is good to aim for the stars, but have a separate list for those more difficult goals. For your day-to-day goals, work on the tasks that you know can be accomplished within 24 hours. If you want to write a book, set a goal for writing one chapter a day— not the entire book.

  • Limit screen usage

Social media has a way of demanding our attention. Limiting time spent on your phone or computer will help you maintain your concentration. If you have a difficult time monitoring your screen time, you can set restrictions on your phone. This will lock you out of the apps of your choosing after a certain amount of time spent on the application.

  • Eat nutritious foods

Eating nutritious meals helps with concentration and attitude. Starting the day with a full stomach and a full tank of energy is a great way to begin checking off your tasks. I know if I allow myself to eat junk food in the morning, my stomach hurts and I feel like curling up in a ball in bed. Listening to your body is also important. It is easy to forget meals or to drink water when you are having a productive day.

  • Let in the sunlight

Whether you spend time outside or simply open the blinds, let the sunlight shine on you. The natural light and warmth is refreshing. If I need to wake up early, I have a sunrise light I use until the real sunrise floods through my window.

  1. Oh yeah, making my to-do list the night before is much more prudent, and I get more done if I do this versus making a to-do list on the same day, for some reason. And cutting down screen time does help as well. Thanks for these great pointers, Ashley!
